BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) ––– With millions across the country heading home for the holidays, officials want you to be safe as we enter a heavy travel weekend.

According to AAA, more than 100 million people are hitting the roadways this weekend, with the Friday before Christmas being one of the busiest days for travel.

If dealing with holiday traffic wasn’t bad enough, freezing temps in the forecast could cause issues for drivers. Louisiana State Police says it’s important to plan alternate routes before getting on the road.

“In the event that there could be some road closures, we wanna make sure motorists have more than one way in going to their destinations, ” said Christian Reed with Louisiana State Police.

He adds that you should consider getting ahead of mechanical failures by inspecting your car. “Motorists should have a plan before entering the interstate systems, bring their vehicles to a local mechanic to make sure their vehicle battery, tires, things of that nature, that they’re good to go when getting on the road,” Reed said.

But it’s not all bad news, AAA also reports the national average for gas prices has gone down roughly 12 cents a gallon.
