Our historic flood in August uprooted families, destroyed property and even changed the landscape of some cities.
Here in Baton Rouge the story was the same, but when a local organization that focuses on helping those in need was left crippled by flood damage, Walmart and the Today Show teamed up to give back.
Flood waters devastated the food bank’s warehouse.
It was flooded with four feet of water, ruining more than 500,000 pounds of food.
Employees at the food bank immediately started picking up the pieces to get things back up and running.
Five of those workers lost everything they had to the water.
Representatives from Walmart heard their stories and decided to help.
The company also enlisted the help of the Today Show to bring a holiday miracle.
Walmart gave each employee toys, electronics, kitchen supplies and a gift card for $2,500.
Walmart also gave big to the food bank itself.
They donated office supplies and electronics that were lost during the flood, as well as a check for $100,000.
