BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD)– A COVID-19 shot while you wait for your bus, that was the idea behind a vaccine clinic at the Central Area Transit System’s hub near Downtown on Monday.

Local organizations such as Healthy Blue and 100 Black Women teamed up with Walgreens to provide the COVID-19 vaccine.

Walgreens North Central Louisiana Healthcare Supervisor Chris Oramasionwu said, “We are happy to be hosting this mobile health equity clinic in partnership with healthy blue. To really bring the necessary healthcare services, along with other health testing to an area that really needs it.”

This allowed transit riders twelve and up to get the vaccine while on the go. Many did take advantage of the program. we saw a steady stream of people lining up, although organizers couldn’t give us an exact total.

Healthy Blue Medicaid Territory Marketing Manager Kathy Victorian said, “We are reaching the ridership. as they transfer from one us to another, they can come and take advantage of the opportunity we are giving them. then they can get on their bus and go on their way.”

Joyce Cobbins said it was so convenient she had to stop.

“I am just over at the terminal here everyday. I didn’t plan to come and get it because I already had an appointment this month on the 30th, but I can go and cancel it now,” said Cobbins.

With the summer break coming up, Walgreens says getting the vaccine is crucial.

Oramasionwu said, “People are really gearing up towards summer activities, spending more time with the family. we are really getting prepared for some of the holidays coming up. The best thing we can do for ourselves is get our loved ones vaccinated.”

Many are looking forward to that sense of normalcy.

Resident Clarence Jefferson said, “For the future, look to get out, do things I used to do, be around a lot of people.”

For those who got the shot like Clarence Jefferson, it came with fresh fruit, goodie bags, and music.

Victorian said, “Because we just want to encourage everyone to actively participate in their health.”

At least 200 Pfizer and Johnson and Johnson vaccines were prepped for this event. Walgreens says they are looking to do another one in the future.
