BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) – It’s been rumored that Louisiana Treasurer John Schroder plans to launch a gubernatorial campaign in 2023.
Schroder clarified matters Thursday when he released a statement detailing his plans.
Essentially, the statement implied that Schroder’s decision hinges on Senator John Kennedy’s next move.
“There has been much speculation about 2023 and what I may or may not do in the future. Senator Kennedy has been a longtime friend, and I was honored to have his endorsement when I ran for Treasurer. In turn, it would be my honor to endorse him if he choses to run for Governor. John Kennedy is the kind of leader I can work with to fix the problems our Great State faces. However, if Senator Kennedy choses not to run, I plan to announce and pursue the title of Governor in 2023.”
Senator Kennedy released a statement last month that said he is “seriously considering” a run for governor in 2023.
Schroder is not the first potential candidate to make Kennedy the main factor in whether or not they decide to run.
Along those lines, Lt. Gov. Billy Nungesser said he plans to meet with Kennedy in the next few weeks to hear what his plans are before making an official announcement.
So far, the only official candidate to announce their campaign is Louisiana Attorney General Jeff Landry.
