BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — It’s the time of the year for spooky decorations, planning costumes and, of course, trick-or-treating.

The tradition of trick-or-treating goes back to the the Middle Ages, according to the History Channel. The Irish and Scottish brought the tradition to the U.S. in the early 20th century.

The National Retail Federation expects spending to reach a record $12.2 billion this Halloween season. Spending on Halloween candy is expected to reach $3.6 billion, NRF said.

An NRF survey’s findings identified the top ways people will participate as:

  • Handing out candy (68%).
  • Decorating their home or yard (53%).
  • Dressing in costume (50%).

  • Ascension Parish: 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 31
  • East Baton Rouge Parish: 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 31
  • Iberville Parish: 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 31
  • Livingston Parish: 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 31
  • Pointe Coupee Parish: 5:30-7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 31 in the areas outside of the municipalities of New Roads, Morganza, Livonia, and Fordoche
  • West Baton Rouge Parish: 5:30-7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 31
