Truck drivers relieved following major roads reopening

BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) – Cars are now free to drive on I-12 and I-10 following the busy interstates being closed due to severe cold weather.

Juan Morel is a truck driver an he’s been stuck in Baton Rouge for more than 24 hours because of the winter weather.

“It’s been a little bit inconvenient, to say the least,” Morel said.

He can’t afford a hotel, so he’s been sleeping in his car. He was supposed to drop his load off in Texas, but icy and slick roads prevented that. Now he’s concerned he won’t get paid since he missed his delivery deadline.

“Sometimes when you’re late to drop the load, you get penalties but I hope everybody understands that the situation is just about nature it’s nothing we can do about it,” Morel said.

Most of I-10 shut down early Monday morning.

Gabriel Bacera says he’s eager to get back on the road.

He says he’s cold and hasn’t eaten in days.

“The problem is [there’s no] bathroom, food, and water,” Bacera said.

Drivers say although roadways are clear, they had to delay their trip again because of the heavy rain.

“I have to be safe,” Morel said.

With nowhere to go, drivers brace themselves to spend another night in the cold, hoping this weather ends soon.
