UNO graduate makes intercollegiate athletics history as first female head coach

NEW ORLEANS, La (BRPROUD) – A former New Orleans women’s basketball student-athlete made history as the first female head men’s basketball coach in National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics history.

University of New Orleans alum Sarah Gayler has been named the head coach of Brescia University men’s basketball team in Kentucky.

Gayler spent two seasons scouting and working in basketball operations with the Milwaukee Bucks.

“College athletics is a lifestyle,” Gayler said in a press release. “It is student-athlete centered and we have their best interests in mind. We want them to leave here being good people.” 

Gayler graduated UNO with a bachelor’s in business management, she appeared in 22 games her senior year.

Keeshawn Davenport, current UNO Privateers head coach, was an assistant coach when she was a student-athlete. 

“This has been her goal and I’m so proud of her,” Davenport said in a press release. “She is going to do an amazing job leading the athletics program and men’s basketball team.”

Gayler was also named the athletic programs director.
