BATON ROUGE, LA (BRPROUD)— A little over week ago we told you about a couple whose dream of a destination wedding in Cozumel turned into a nightmare after coronavirus fears made the bride reconsider their trip in order to keep loved ones with health issues safe.
March 21, 2020 was the day the couple had chosen to get married at the Mr. Sanchos Beach Resort in Cozumel, Mexico. Despite there being a worldwide pandemic, the resort refused to refund the paid funds or even allow the couple to push their wedding date back to later in the year.
After we aired their story, the couple tried to pull together a ceremony which would have been held at the Tracy Center however, before the bride Ashley could get out of the door to the venue, the owner informed her of the new mandate that said there could be no events with groups larger than 10.
Devastated, Ashley Robertson spent her week pretty numb to everything around her and struggled to come to terms that her March wedding date just would not be. Little did she know, her king Jonthan had some surprises up his sleeve.
BRPROUD: So how did the day start? Did you know you were going to still get married on Saturday?
Ashley: Jonthan and I were hanging around the house and he asked if I would take a ride with him. I got dressed and went along for the ride. When we arrive at Rose Hill in Port Allen, LA I was kind of confused about why we were going to the church. When we were inside the church, the pastor said he was ready to marry us and asked if I was ready to get married. I replied yes and we went through the ceremony and said our vows. Neither of us had the rings at that moment but it really didn’t matter.
BRPROUD: Okay so you’re married now, was that all that you were expecting for the day?
Ashley: I wasn’t really expecting anything. I was just excited that we had just gotten married. However, when we got back home Jonthan told me that we had reservations for 7:00pm and that I needed to get dressed up. I was really confused because to my knowledge everything was closed and there was no dining in anywhere. I just kept asking him was he sure that we had reservations because we weren’t supposed to be going anywhere. He once again said yes and asked me to please be ready so that we could be on time. I didn’t keep putting up a fuss I just said okay and started to figure out what I would wear.
BRPROUD: You’re dressed and ready to go, what happened next? Did you know where you were going yet?
Ashley: I still had no idea where we were going. We left the house at about 6:40pm. We’d gotten all the way to the Prarievillie/Geismar exit when Jonthan stated that he’d forgotten his wallet. I told him don’t worry about it and that we could use my debit card. Now I am very irresponsible with my debit card sometimes so I started to look for it and I couldn’t find it. Jonthan started fussing reminding me that I have to remember where I put such things. I’m so focused on retracing my steps with my card that I never realized that we’d turned around and started driving back to the house. We even stopped at a gas station and were there about 10 minutes. I knew I had a full tank of gas but I was still focused on where my debit card could be. When we got home, he ran inside to get his wallet and I decided to go inside to go to the restroom and I just was not ready for what I saw.
To Ashley’s surprise, she walked into her home and there were candles and rose petals everywhere complete with dinner for two at their dining room table. I mean we could gush about all of the details as Ashley did during our phone call but we think you would rather see just how smitten the newlyweds truly were. Their love truly moved us to tears.
Check out the video below:
There was no sand or beach anywhere near my house that day but everything was perfect. My husband went above and beyond to make our day truly special. I’m usually a person that has to be very hands on and he did all of this by himself. I’m just so blessed that I get to spend the rest of my life with him, says Mrs. Ashley Harris.
After a lovely dinner of steak, shrimp kabobs, green beans and loaded baked potatoes, the newlyweds decided to exchange rings. (Remember they didn’t have them when they went to the church that morning.) Watch the video clip below to see Ashley present Jonthan with his new wedding bands.
Next Jonthan present Ashley with her ring. Here’s a little back story. Jonthan asked Ashley if he could hold her ring for awhile in December. She gave the ring to him and they just told people that the ring was in the shop. That should help explain Ashley’s priceless reaction to receiving her ring.
The couple does intend to still have their dream ceremony. As of now, their cruise has been rescheduled for June.
The venue in Cozumel, Mr. Sanchos, still has yet to offer the couple a refund or change their wedding date. The resort did inform the couple that they were reviewing their refund policy and would have an answer for them within 60-90 days.
Oh and that debit card was in Jonthan’s back pocket the entire time.
We are wishing the Harris’ a lifetime of love and happiness.
