BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — The Baton Rouge Fire Department provides the public with surveillance video to find the person behind a church fire.

BRFD responded to the Istrouma Baptist Church on Monday at around 7:30 a.m.

“The fire department arrived on scene and saw the door was burned,” said Justin Hill from the Baton Rouge Fire Department.

In the video, a person walks up the door wearing a mask and gloves holding what investigators say is a spray can and lighter. Moments later a bright flash is seen and the person runs away.

The suspect was wearing bright red shoes in the video, according to BRFD.

Istrouma Baptist Church provided the following statement:

“Our staff is working with Baton Rouge Police Department, Baton Rouge Fire Department, and arson investigators after a security camera captured video of suspicious activity at our Baton Rouge Campus. The incident resulted in no damage to our facilities, with minimal clean-up required, and with no disruption to on-campus activities. We are grateful for God’s protection over our people and facilities and thankful for our first responders.”

Hill says something like this has never happened before at the church. But cases of arson continue to be common in the Baton Rouge area.

“Arson can be started for numerous reasons. It can be because of mental illness. It could be because of personal grudges. Financial reasons. Hard to tell with arson because it can be so many different causes,” he said.

The department’s number of arrests related to arson is higher than the national average, according to Hill.

But investigators still need your help in finding the suspect in this incident. Anyone with more information is asked to call the Baton Rouge Fire Department at 225-389-2050 or report anonymously through Crime Stoppers.
