Chimp Haven offers first of two remaining 2019 public access days on Saturday, October 19th

KEITHVILLE, La., (WVLA/WGMB) – Chimp Haven, the world’s largest chimpanzee sanctuary located less than an hour outside of Shreveport, is opening its doors next weekend for one of two exclusive Chimpanzee Discovery Days this fall. On October 19, visitors are invited to the sanctuary to experience firsthand the 200-acre forested oasis and personalized care it provides for nearly 300 chimpanzees, most of whom were retired from biomedical research.

Visitors will have the chance to see chimpanzees interact and play in lush outdoor habitats, discover the natural wonders nestled in the forested oasis, and take a behind-the-scenes tour of the growing sanctuary. Staff will lead educational talks and answer questions about the chimpanzees’ personalities, preferences, diet and individualized veterinary care.

“Chimp Haven is truly unlike any place else, and the recent arrival of several new chimps means there’s no better time to come see our residents experience the joys of retirement,” said Chimp Haven President and CEO Rana Smith. “Witnessing these amazing animals climbing, playing and enjoying their enriching environment here at Chimp Haven is an unmatched experience for visitors of all ages, and offers a rare glimpse at the intricate wonders of caring for large groups of chimpanzees.”

Chimp Haven is expanding. With more chimpanzees still living in research facilities set to arrive this fall and throughout the spring, the private, nonprofit sanctuary is raising funds for its growing chimpanzee family. Chimp Haven relies solely on philanthropic contributions to cover the cost of building new habitats for the chimpanzees. The public can support the sanctuary’s growth and help raise $25,000 by participating in Giving Day for Apes and donating early at:
