BATON ROUGE, La (BRPROUD)- EBR school board appoints Associate Superintendent, Adam Smith, as Interim Superintendent.

Emotions ran high during the East Baton Rouge school board meeting Thursday night. Parents and community members weighing in on what seems to be a tough decision.

After recently appointed Superintendent, Leslie Brown, abruptly resigned. Board member Dadrius Lanus proposed bringing back the top four candidates not chosen during the last search — saying, time is of the essence.

“Our community put up $25,000 to make sure this search was done with fidelity. I think that it was, and I think that we could have just went back rather than buying the time and trying to find another superintendent because we’re going to find ourselves in the same situation again” said Lanus.

According to a state law, the board now has to advertise the position twice, one week apart and wait at least 30 days to take action.

“That means we have almost a month we lose out of that process and we still have no superintendent in place with everything that’s going on around our district and that’s a serious concern not just for myself but for several of my colleagues as well as our community as a whole” said Lanus.

Many people say, the search has gone on long enough and the right person for the job wasalready in the room.

“The person that everyone calls on to help problem solve and resolve is Mr. Adam Smith each and every time” said Maria Harmon, Co-Founder of Step Up Louisiana.

“Why should we have him continuing to teach someone else how to do the job that he is actually doing” said Parent, Corhonda Corley.

With the board starting from scratch, people say, they hope this time they get it right.

“I just hope the board just really think through with some sound decision that’s really for the betterment of the children, betterment for the teachers and all our families that are served by them” said Harmon.
