BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — Thousands of people are left without insurance — Lighthouse Excalibur, Maison and Southern Fidelity have all canceled their policies in Louisiana. Two lawmakers on the insurance committee spoke on what should be your next step.
There are more than 100 thousand people wondering where to go for insurance. State Representative Lawrence Frieman said Louisiana Citizens is where to go.
“I want to make that very clear that they are not going to be left uninsured. Louisiana Citizens will pick them up, will have to pick them up,” said Rep. Frieman.
Louisiana Citizens is a nonprofit organization that was created to provide insurance for residential and commercial policyholders. Being that they are a nonprofit organization, your rates may go up.
“Because Citizens is the insurer of last resort, it is state-mandated to be more costly than private insurers,” said the Louisiana Department of Insurance in a statement.
The only way to get covered by Louisiana Citizens is to contact your agent.
“I would definitely call my agent, number one. And number two, if can’t, if you don’t have an agent or your agent somehow can help then definitely call the commissioner of insurance office,” continued Rep. Frieman.
It is yet to be determined if Louisiana Citizens will cover everything like previous insurance companies or just the bare minimum. Rep. Frieman said everyone regardless of claim status, will be covered.
“Louisiana Citizens will insure them even with an open claim,” said Rep. Frieman.
State Representative Tanner Magee said Louisiana Citizens need to be your last option.
“I don’t want to denigrate the product of Louisiana, but I think there’s better options if you can get on something else,” said Rep. Magee.
