A Baton Rouge family is mourning the loss of their 7-year-old after he was struck by a car and killed Sunday evening.
On Monday the family of Joedi Davis met exclusively with WVLA/WGMB.
“My baby, my Joedi, if I could just hold my baby one last time,” Davis’ mother Eloise Hampton said.
Hampton says Davis and his siblings were outside playing at a birthday party, when in a matter of seconds, their lives changed forever.
“I broke down on my knees,” Hampton said. “I’m not the same person anymore, it’s just not the same for me.”
Glenn, Joedi’s oldest brother, pulled him out from underneath the car. He said the scene felt like a nightmare that would never end.
“All I was telling him was ‘get up, get up brother, get up,’” he said. “
Davis’ 9-year-old sister, Joeneika, wrote a letter detailing her sadness after learning the news of her brother’s death.
“My heart is broken, why did he have to die? I love my brother,” she wrote.
No arrests have been made and BRPD says the investigation is ongoing. The 7-year-old’s family is pleading with drivers to slow down, saying they believe the drivers speed was responsible for Davis’ death.
“if [the driver] would’ve been doing the speed limit, my baby would’ve never been [killed].” Hampton said.
As family and friends lit candles and prayed, they say they’re thankful for the memories they shared with Davis in his short life, and can’t wait for the moment they all meet again.
