BATON ROUGE, LA (BR-PROUD) – The YMCA is hosting a socially distant charity golf tournament in a few weeks, and is offering tips on how to improve your golf swing.
The YMCA is gearing up it’s Beyond the Green golf tournament.
“We do these events throughout the year to raise some money for scholarships and things for people who otherwise could not afford our programs.”
YMCA Personal Trainer Meredith Atterbery has some tips to help improve your golf swing.
A great place to start is your core, your shoulder flexibility and then your endurance as well.”
Atterbery said a good core workout is a simple rotation stretch.
“If you have a nice golf club with you, you can use a broom handle, anything that’s with you. Just start with some basic rotations. If you keep your bellybutton tucked in, your core engaged, you can really work those obliques. You can always use a weighted bar as well.”
When it comes to shoulder flexibility, Atterbery said a few stretches can do the trick.
“You can take this golf club, go straight up over your head and just press your knuckles back behind you. Really open up those shoulder blades, really rotate those shoulders back and increase that range of motion.”
Atterbery said endurance is also key.
“We can work on endurance and we can work on leg strength. One way to do that, again if you have your golf club it will help you keep your chest nice and tall, you can work on squats, you can also do lunges, which in this case reverse lunges will work great. This is strengthening your knees, hips, ankles and getting your heart rate up.”
You can even work on your endurance while playing the game.
“When golfing it’s great to be outdoors and to get fresh air, but it’s awesome to walk. I know the golf cart is super tempting, but that is just more time seated. If you have the opportunity to walk I would definitely encourage you to do that,” said Atterbery.
The The golf tournament is set for October 2, 2020.
