BATON ROUGE, LA (BRPROUD) – Accountability, it’s what helps so many people stay focused on their goals, and when it comes to fitness, having that extra layer of support goes a long way.
“Having a workout buddy is great because it’s that accountability that you need to actually take that step inside the gym.”
YMCA Personal Trainer Meredith Atterbery said having someone to hold you accountable makes starting easier.
“When the alarm goes off in the morning and you don’t have anyone to meet at the gym it’s a lot easier to just hit snooze and roll back over. But when you know that you have somebody there waiting for you, you’re actually a lot more inclined to take that first step out of bed.”
Atterbery said choose your workout partner wisely.
“You do want to pick out a workout buddy that has the same motivation that you do. If you pick a workout buddy that’s not motivated, they’re going to end up discouraging you so it’s actually going to end up being more harmful than it is beneficial.”
Atterbery said working out with someone can also be beneficial for your mental health, especially during this pandemic.
“We’ve been in our houses so much and there’s been so much stuff that we can’t do socially that we normally do with concerts and tours and museums. So this is an awesome opportunity to spend quality time with your buddies and do something active, do some thing healthy. It’s really good mentally and physically.”
If you’re nervous to ask, Atterbery said don’t hesitate.
“If you’re timid about asking someone to be your workout buddy, do it. Because they’re probably hoping that you ask them because they’re equally as timid to ask you. So when in doubt just ask them.”
