BATON ROUGE, LA (BR-PROUD) – Summer is in full swing, which means many families will be spending time near the water.
Kristen Hogan with the YMCA says now is a great time to learn how to swim.
“We offer swim lessons for anyone ages six months of age and older. It is never too late to learn how to swim, even if you’re an adult we still offer lessons, we can help you learn.”
In Louisiana, we are surrounded by water making it even more important to know how swim.
“In Louisiana there’s water everywhere, whether it’s different creeks or ponds. Nowadays everyone has a pool in their backyard‘s even the little blowup pools or plastic pools. A child can drowned in an area with just 1 inch of water, so it’s real important that everyone learns to swim. They’re just too many opportunities where you can find yourself in a dangerous situation,” said Hogan.
Swim lessons are available for all ages.
“We have a mom and me swim lesson. That is actually free with a family membership at the YMCA. So you can get those lessons for free, and then for six months of age and older.”
If you are looking to sign up for lessons the YMCA has a number of options available to fit your schedule.
“We have a Monday through Thursday option. We have weekend options as well for those working parents,” said Hogan.
Hogan said you can also apply for assistance to help cover the cost.
“We encourage anyone, even if you’re not a member, to come and register for swimming lessons. We also like to remind everyone that if you feel like there’s a financial burden we do have a scholarship program. We want it to be available for all so feel free to fill out a scholarship application.”
