BATON ROUGE, LA (BR-PROUD) – As gyms continue to loosen restrictions, the YMCA is once again offering group exercise classes, but with some restrictions.
Group exercise classes are back at the YMCA under phase two of reopening.
“We made some modifications to our group exercise schedule. We weren’t able to offer all of the classes back because we did have to allow more time for sanitizing in between each class, but we are slowly adding classes back to the schedule,” said YMCA Personal Trainer Meredith Atterbery.
Like most places, there are some changes in place for safety.
“We took our group exercise classes and moved them from the studio, which is a little bit smaller, and moved them into our basketball gym. That enabled us to have a lot more space and everyone can spread out and we can accommodate a lot more members,” Atterbery said.
The YMCA is also taking extra efforts to sanitize equipment.
“We no longer share equipment. So for example on a circuit class you would normally have multiple people using the same mat but now you’re responsible for your own equipment and you use the same mat throughout the entire class. Everything is sanitized before it’s used and sanitized after,” Atterbery said.
Atterbery said to remember to stay six feet apart.
“We were able to take these really cool YMCA blue little dots and they’re spaced out 9 feet apart and 8 feet long to help have that visual cue to let you know where to stand so we can really spread out.”
You also need to reserve a spot ahead of time to participate.
“We implemented an online registration system through our website. A few simple clicks will have you registered for classes and we recommend that everyone registers before you show up to the Y.”
Atterbery is encouraging you to grab a friend and get moving.
“They’re just glad to see their friends even if it’s from 6 feet apart. You can still have that conversation and camaraderie from a safe distance.”
