Workout Wednesday: Pickleball

BATON ROUGE, LA (LOCAL33) (FOX44) - The YMCA just rolled out a new program. Grab a paddle and join in on the Pickleball madness. 

Picklebal started in the 1960's. It's a combination of tennis, ping pong and bad mitten. 

"It's a great exercise because it's fun! It's for any age, any skill level. It gets your heart rate pumping. It works on agility, speed and your hand-eye coordination. And again it's a lot of fun," said YMCA Marketing Director Kristen Hogan.

The YMCA encourages every one to try something different. 

"If you usually get on the treadmill, or get on the bike and you're used to that routine, try to switch it up. This is a great way to get some exercise while having fun at the same time," Hogan said. 

Hogan said a person weighing about 160 lbs. who participates in pickleball for about 30 minutes can burn up to 250 calories. 

Pickleball is currently 3 of the local YMCA locations. Those include Americana YMCA, A. C. Lewis YMCA and Paula G. Manship YMCA. 

Pickleball is available Monday - Friday at different times depending on the location. Free play is also available.
