BATON ROUGE, LA (BR-PROUD) – If you’re looking for a new activity to pick up, tennis is a great option. A recent study said tennis is one of the safest sports to play during this pandemic.

While many activities are being halted because of the coronavirus, one sport is actually thriving.

“USTA just sent out a graph and it had tennis as the number one activity during COVID-19 as safest.”

YMCA Tennis Director Ronnie Walters said tennis has been listed as one of safest activities to play during the pandemic.

“Well first of all, the distance between the players on the court it’s so far apart that it makes it very safe. Also you can get multiple balls, you don’t have to touch the same balls, so there are safe ways of doing it.”

In addition to safety, it’s also a great cardio workout.

“It’s definitely a number one cardio sport. Number one is soccer and number three is basketball. So tennis is a cardio workout, that’s probably the biggest benefit, plus it is social you can at least talk across the net to each other. It also has strategy, keeps the mind engaged,” said Walters.

If you’ve never played tennis before, Walters said now is a great time to try something new.

“Absolutely! Right now is the best time because there’s so much indoor time together, so I think that doing something new and different can help with the overall morale of the people. It’s great to see people staying in shape during this crazy time, being able to get out in the sunlight. Vitamin D is very important for your health, so I think it’s a great thing.”
