Workout Wednesday: Tips on eating healthy while eating out

We all love eating out but it can be challenging when on a healthy eating plan. 

Morning Anchor Carly Laing headed out to a local restaurant Flambee to get tips on how to stay healthy when eating out. 

Kristen Hogan, Marketig Director of the Capital Area YMCA said making healthy choices when dining out start right when you sit down. 

“You always want to start with water. Make sure you are drinking that through out your meal because it’s going to help keep you full.”

Hogan said coming to the restaurant with a game plan also can make a big difference. 

“You definitely want to check out the menu options online before you go to the restaurant. You want to pick out your healthy choices and that way when you get there and sit down to eat you don’t even need the menu. You’ve already pick out the healthy choice and that way you aren’t tempted by anything else that’s on there.”

Another tip, ask for a to-go box when your food comes out. 

“Sometimes the serving sizes are way too much. If you just get a to-go box, take half of that and put it in the box, eat what’s left on your plate and you will be full I guarantee it,” said Hogan.  

Carly and Hogan ordered the Jardin Flambee with cauliflower crust, the Nicoise salad and the Salmon and Lentiles entree. 

Cauliflower crust is a great substitute for traditional pizza crust. The Nicioise salad has tuna, which is a good, heart-healthy fatty acid with lots of protein. Salmon is also a good fatty acid and a great alternative to red meats or fried meats.
