Workout Wednesday: Tips on how to avoid cravings

Avoiding cravings is hard especially when making a life change, but there are a number of tricks and tips to help keep you on track.

There are a number of things you can do to avoid cravings and curb your appetite.

YMCA Marketing Director Kristen Hogan said using a smaller plate can help keep you from over eating.

“If you can pick a smaller plate it actually helps to trick the mind that you have enough food. So if you have a large plate it’s trick you into thinking we need more food than what our bodies really want,” said Hogan.

Hogan also recommends essential oils.

“The scent of pepper mint or jasmine have been scienticfically proven to help to curb your appetite.”

You can also chew gum if you feel like you want to snack out of boredum.

“You can also grab some sugar free gum because that will satisfy your tastebuds and also drinking water. Lots of times you think you’re hungry when you’re actually just dehydrated.”

Another helpful tip is brushing your teeth.

“Who wants to eat after brushing your teeth?”

You can also ruin your food to keep you from snacking on sweets and things that are not healthy.

“If none of the tips that we’ve given you so far help you to curb that craving, ruin your food. Grab whatever is around like salad dressing and pour on the dessert. No one wants to eat cake with salad dressing all over it.”
