Workout Wednesday: Why spicing up your workout can bring new results

BATON ROUGE, LA (BRPROUD) – Having a routine at the gym is great, but experts say don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone and try something new.

When it comes to fitness, many find comfort in a routine.

“The commitment, the consistency is great but when you kind of plateau out and you’re not feeling those changes that’s when it’s time to change something up.”

But, YMCA Personal Trainer Meredith Atterbery says stepping out of that comfort zone will bring new results.

“So anytime we change something it causes our body to change. If we keep doing that same thing for an extended amount of time our body just adapts to it and you won’t really experience those changes.”

Atterbery says when trying something new take it one step at a time.

“Take it in small increments. You don’t have to do everything at one time. There isn’t only one way to get fit. It’s just about making those changes, challenging your body a little bit more every single time.”

That can mean trying a new equipment, mixing up your fitness routine or taking up a new activity.

“Maybe you love just walking on the treadmill and you’re not really comfortable running but you could do the incline. You’re going to activate a lot more hamstrings, a lot more glutes, your heart rates going to go up even higher without having to move your legs necessarily any faster.”

And if you’re not sure where to start don’t be afraid to ask for help.

“If you have a workout buddy they may know how to do it, if not ask a staff person. We always have a staff person here at the Y that can help out and we’re experts on every piece of equipment in here,” said Atterbery.
