YMCA supplies community with fresh produce ahead of Thanksgiving

BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — Thanksgiving is right around the corner and several organizations are helping spread holiday cheer by passing out food to those in need, including the YMCA.

Cars wrapped around the block so people could receive boxes of fresh fruits and vegetables just in time for the holidays. The YMCA partnered with The Executive Center, Top Box Foods, and Albertsons to distribute fresh produce to families in need.

“There’s no turkey, unfortunately, which I would love to give away but it’s a lot of fresh produce so hoping to, you know, supplement their nonperishable food items that they maybe have gotten from someone else,” said the YMCA’s Registered Dietitian Sarah Broekhoven.

At the drive-thru distribution, two hundred boxes filled with apples, potatoes, peppers, greens, recipes, and more were passed out at the A. C. Lewis YMCA on 350 South Foster Drive.

“Food insecurity is such a major issue in our community, so the fact that we are able to help bridge that gap with this event today is just amazing,” Broekhoven.

Executive Center General Manager Jude Franklin said the pandemic only made the need greater.

“The pandemic has taken a toll on food insecurity programs from organizations that have gone dry, so, we’re doing as much as we can to help out,” Franklin said.

For Broekhoven, she’s elated to help her community.

“It sounds so cliché but it gives me like a warm tingly feeling,” said Broekhoven. “People are so appreciative. They say to me, ‘thank you so much for doing this,’ and I’m like, of course, it’s so simple. If we can do it, of course, let’s do it.”

Broekhoven said they’re always looking for more volunteers to participate in events like this. If you’d like to participate next time, click this link.
