BATON ROUGE, La (BRPROUD)- The YMCA of the Capital Area is supporting veterans and their families with programs and initiatives that improve their well-being and provide opportunities to connect with each other.

Starting Nov. 8-10, the YMCA will host a mobile Vet Center to offer services such as connecting Veterans to benefits, providing VA resources, and more. The MVC will be available from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the A. C. Lewis YMCA, 350 South Foster Drive. In addition, the A. C. Lewis YMCA will offer pastalaya on Monday, November 8th beginning at 11:30 am to the first 150 Veterans and community members.

“Military families have many needs when a loved one is away from home,” said Christian Engle, President & CEO, YMCA of the Capital Area. “Whether it’s providing a place where kids can make friends and have a sense of belonging or providing a place for adults to meet health goals, the Y is here and able to help.”

The YMCA of the Capital Area offers Y memberships through the Military Outreach Initiative. Since 2008, the Military Outreach Initiative has provided more than 82,000 Y memberships to military members and their families. Additionally, the Y is the recipient of a 2021 Veterans Affairs Adaptive Sports Grant, which will offer YMCA memberships to Veterans to improve their independence, well-being, and quality of life through adaptive sports and therapeutic arts programs that complement VA’s rehabilitation system of care for Veterans and members of the Armed Forces with disabilities.

First established by the Armed Services YMCA (ASYMCA) and recognized by the U.S. government ever since, Military Family Month recognizes the dedication and service of military personnel and their families.
