Longtime Denham Springs educator looking to make a change in District 71

“I’ve lived by the philosophy all of my life, if you’re going to change things, then go change things.”

Lori Callais is looking to do just that in Denhman Springs, hoping to go from the classroom to the State Capitol.

“I just looked at the state in my community and I saw things that I just wasn’t satisfied with” said Callais.

The long time educator is seeking the District 71 State Representative seat.

“I’m running on a shoestring budget and I’m proud of it. I’ve worked hard all my life. I’m a teacher, I know what it’s like to take nothing and make something of it because teachers have always been inadequately paid.”

Callais said, her background in education helps her bring something fresh to the table.

“When teachers teach a good one, when those children, those students walk into the classroom, you never  worry about what party they belong to. You meet them in the middle and take them where they need to go and that’s what’s missing.”

She said, she plans to tackle other issues within her district, one many people see but rarely talk about.

“One of those issue right now is mental health care and drug addiction this is a very big problem in this district and something I think that we need to address. I don’t know of any family here that hasn’t been in some way impacted by those issues.”

The political new comer said, she’s also planning to tackle one of the biggest issued the area faced in 2016.

“I was born and raised in Livingston Parish. I learned to swim and fish in the Amite river but in 2016, that river rose to 46 feet and it caused the most devastating flood we’ve ever experienced and in that moment, we weren’t republican or democrat, we were neighbors and that’s what we’re going to have to bring to the legislature.”

The democrat prides herself on transparency, saying, she’s for all the people despite her party. She said, there’s one thing she wants voters to do. She asks that the separate the person from the party and choose who they fell is the best candidate.

“Look at the person, this is a person that is going to represent you for the next four years. They are going to make decision that influence your life, your everyday life.”
