COVINGTON, La. (AP) — A Louisiana sheriff has fired a deputy chief who was arrested on suspicion of driving while intoxicated.
A brief statement Friday from St. Tammany Parish Sheriff Randy Smith said 51-year-old Gregory Longino had been fired that morning.
A news release Thursday said the 29-year veteran was off-duty and in his personal car when Causeway Police stopped him about 5:30 a.m. Thursday on the 24-mile-long Lake Pontchartrain Causeway.
Causeway General Manager Carlton Dufrechou told news media that Longino was driving between 90 to 108 miles an hour.
The speed limit on the bridge is 65 mph.
Sheriff’s spokeswoman Meredith Timberlake says she did not know whether Longino had an attorney who could comment on his behalf.
A court date for him to answer the charges is pending.
