BATON ROUGE, La. (BRProud) – Ascension Parish Fire Coordinator over the Volunteer Departments, Gene Witek passed away on Wednesday evening.
Witek died around 6:30 p.m. and State Fire Marshall Butch Browning had this to say about the longtime public servant:
“The fire service has lost another bright light with the passing of Gene Witek, Ascension Parish Fire Coordinator over volunteer departments,” said State Fire Marshal Butch Browning, “I knew Gene during my time as Gonzales Fire Chief and he was always the truest example of a dedicated advocate for the fire service.”
“Gene will certainly be missed and the State Fire Marshal’s Office stands in mourning today with his loved ones, friends, brothers and sisters in the fire service and community.”
Witek came from Wisconsin over a half a decade ago and brought his love of the Green Bay Packers with him.
Members of the Emergency Response field in the area are expected to help escort Witek to Ascension Parish on Thursday.
Some of Witek’s jobs over the years included:
- President of the Louisiana Fire Chief’s Association
- President of the Ascension Parish Mutual Aid Association,
- Fire Chief of the 7th. Dist. Volunteer Fire Department
- Board member and officer of the St. Amant Volunteer Fire Department
- President of the 5th. Ward Volunteer Fire Department
The fire chief at the St. Amant & 5th Ward Communities, had this to say about Witek’s passing:
“Our hearts are completely shattered, but our faith remains strong.”
