March was a long year, but for the people who won portions of over $19 million dollars from winning lottery drawings and scratch off tickets, it was a lucky one. The Louisiana Lottery reports that lottery drawings in the month of March produced $5.7 million in winnings. $13.4 million dollars in scratch-off winnings were also claimed.
Among the rewards were two “Easy 5” jackpot-winning tickets totaling $231,203, which brought the game’s monthly total winnings to $351,777 with an additional $106,205 won on “ezmatch”, an instant-win option available for an additional $1.
“More than 21,000 Power Play purchasers won an extra $292,165 in addition to their regular Powerball prizes,” Lottery President Rose Hudson said. “Also, more than 14,000 Megaplier purchasers won a bonus total of $133,470 in addition to their regular Mega Millions prizes.”
Lottery drawing winners have 180 days from the date on the ticket to claim their prizes.
“We encourage players to sign the back of their tickets immediately after purchasing and to check them promptly after the drawing. Even if a ticket does not win the jackpot, it could have won another prize,” Hudson added.
According to the Louisiana Lottery, actual game performance and the amount of prizes claimed will vary from month to month, but regardless, the Lottery allocates nearly 53.7 percent of sales to fund prizes. 35 percent or more of sales is transferred to the state treasury for the Minimum Foundation Program that funds K-12 public education in Louisiana. Retailers are paid 5.6% compensation, and the Lottery retains less than 6% of sales to operate.
