The secretary of the Louisiana Department of Transportation will deliver a commencement speech at Baton Rouge Community College’s 23rd commencement ceremony Friday at 10 a.m. at the Bonne Sante’ Health and Wellness Center on the Mid City Campus located at 201 Community College Drive.
Shawn Wilson will speak at the ceremony in which 300 degrees will be awarded to students who completed their studies this summer and fall.
Wilson has served as the Louisiana Department of Transportation’s secretary since 2016, and at the time Gov. John Bel Edwards appointed him to that position, Wilson already had 15 years of executive service under his belt, according to BRCC Executive Director of Public Relations and Marketing Kizzy Payton.
“We are pleased to welcome Dr. Shawn Wilson as our commencement speaker this fall,” BRCC Interim Chancellor Willie E. Smith said. “As the structural landscape of Louisiana continues to grow under Dr. Wilson’s leadership, providing an abundance of opportunity for our graduates, we look forward to him sharing words of encouragement through his experience in leveraging opportunity, revenue growth, and collaboration and diversification of such an important government office.”
Wilson, a New Orleans native, has used his current position to advocate for creating new revenue, maximizing federal dollars available to Louisiana, advancing a balanced and comprehensive transportation policy and ensuring the department is more collaborative and diverse, Payton wrote.
