LAKE CHARLES, La. (AP) — A southwest Louisiana sheriff’s deputy has been arrested for an alleged sexual relationship with a prisoner.
Deputy Amber Kelly, 31, faces charges of malfeasance in office, sexual conduct, the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office said. Sheriff Tony Mancuso later fired her.
The sheriff’s office received a complaint Aug. 26, about an inappropriate sexual relationship Kelly had with an inmate while on duty, multiple news agencies reported. Detectives investigated and turned over their findings to the Calcasieu Parish District Attorney’s Office which accepted the charges on March 3. She was arrested Thursday. Bond was set at $45,000. It was unknown if she has an attorney who could speak on her behalf.
“I am very upset by this incident,” Mancuso said. “We have an extensive hiring process to ensure we are hiring qualified and competent deputies, but unfortunately we occasionally have one that chooses to stray from the path of integrity. These sort of actions will never be tolerated in our department and deputies will always be held accountable for their actions.”
Prior to being terminated, Kelly worked as a correctional deputy at the Calcasieu Sheriff’s Prison and had been with the department for five years.
