BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) – If you are looking for healthcare coverage, now is the time to enroll. Healthcare open enrollment is now available through the federal government.

Senior healthcare economist Mike Bertaut relayed how important it is to take charge of your different coverage options before it’s too late.

“The federal government provides billions of dollars of tax credits for people who want to buy insurance there. And in Louisiana, they’re covering 70 or even 80% of the premiums of the average person who goes to buy on healthcare.gov,” Bertaut said.

Bertaut said most healthcare.gov plans have a premium of zero.

“If your income is low enough, the cost sharing, the deductibles, co-insurance and that sort of thing will also be very low, just a few hundred dollars a year,” said Bertaut.

Bertaut suggested that before shopping for a healthcare plan make sure your contact information is up to date.

To have healthcare coverage starting Monday, Jan. 1, 2024, you need to enroll by Friday, Dec. 15. Open enrollment ends on Monday, Jan. 15.
