UPDATE: 12/13/22 8:30 P.M.: State Police say they are still conducting interviews as part of the investigation into Monday’s shooting incident inside the St. Mary Parish courthouse in Franklin.
One person, an inmate, died following the shooting.
The deceased, so far, has not been identified.
FRANKLIN, La. (KLFY) — Louisiana State Police has confirmed that a man was shot and killed at the St. Mary Parish courthouse Monday morning.
According to LSP, the incident involved a confrontation between a corrections deputy with the St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Office and an in-custody inmate transported to the courthouse for official business.
“During the course of the confrontation, the inmate sustained life-threatening injuries and was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced deceased by medical staff. No deputies were injured during the incident,” police said.
According to Sheriff Blaise Smith, the person was shot shortly before 9 a.m. Monday morning.
The shooting occurred in a deliberation chamber of a courtroom on the sixth floor, according to Franklin Mayor Eugene Foulcard.
The Louisiana State Police are investigating the incident, along with the St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Office and the Franklin Police Department. This story will be updated as more information becomes available.
