A woman from Flatwoods, La., died Sunday night when she was hit by two trucks while standing on the roadway of a state highway in Natchitoches Parish.

Gretta Dewitt, 44, was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident on Louisiana Highway 1, according to the Natchitoches Parish Sheriff’s Office.

Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop E responded to the crash at Highway 1, just south of Louisiana Highway 495, around 7:20 p.m. Sunday.

The initial investigation revealed Dewitt was standing in the northbound lane of travel when she was struck by a 2014 Dodge pickup truck driven by 36-year-old Alexis Dunn of Cloutierville.

Despite efforts to avoid her, a 2006 Ford pickup truck driven by 21-year-old Jesse Shilling of Gorum, struck Dewitt in the southbound lane.

It is unclear whether Dewitt was struck by a third vehicle, a 2000 GMC pickup truck driven by Michael E. Bynog of Lena, as this vehicle may have simply passed over her without making contact.

Dunn, Shilling, and Bynog were wearing seat belts and were not injured.

Dewitt was pronounced dead by the Natchitoches Parish Coroner’s Office.

Natchitoches Parish Sheriff’s Deputies, Natchitoches Regional Medical Center EMS and Natchitoches Parish Fire District #1 also responded to the scene.

Routine toxicology tests are pending.

The crash remains under investigation.
