BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) – When it comes to breakfast foods, there’s a lot to choose from.

Some people prefer the savory flavors of bacon and eggs while others go for the sweeter side of life with pancakes and syrup, or their favorite doughnuts.

Is it better to eat breakfast or skip it?

There are also the 20 percent of individuals in the U.S. who prefer to skip breakfast altogether.

But those 1 in 5 adults who choose not to break their fast in the morning are warned by a number of healthcare professionals that this may not be the best habit to acquire.

A Delaware-based registered dietitian by the name of Sharon Collison was quoted in Time magazine as saying, “People who consume breakfast regularly often have increased physical activity. They have better dietary profiles and lower intake of snacks. Skipping breakfast is associated with increased disease risk — not only obesity but diabetes, heart disease and just lower dietary quality.”

Johns Hopkins Medicine adds that eating a healthy breakfast “may help your heart, digestion, bones and more to meet dietary guidelines!”

So, there’s a lot to be said about the benefits of taking some time to enjoy a morning meal.

What’s the #1 breakfast choice in Louisiana?

While cereal takes the top spot as the most popular breakfast in the U.S., one poll reveals that Louisianans have a preference for beignets.
