Louisiana’s Young Readers Choice: nominates “Martin & Anne” by Nancy Churnin

BATON ROUGE, La (BRPROUD)- Louisiana Young Readers Choice (LYRC) nominated book for 2021-2022 highlights “Martin and Anne: The Kindred Spirits of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Anne Frank by Nancy Churnin, illustrated by Yevgenia Nayberg as the book of choice for 3rd to 5th Graders.

The LYRC book is also read aloud by a staff member at the West Baton Rouge Parish Library via Youtube

“Martin and Anne: The Kindred Spirits of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Anne Frank,” talks about the lives of both Anne Frank and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. as they inspired the nation— overcame obstacles and became legendary icons—for all.

The author, Churnin narrates the stories of how Martin and Anne faced similar racial hatreds and reacted to that hate with words of love— reaching out to build understanding rather than divisiveness. Martin & Anne’s stories, encourage all of us to choose kindness whenever we can.

The Louisiana Young Readers’ Choice program was founded in 1999 with the first award given in 2000. Participation in this program has climbed from 5,485 votes the first year to over 29,000 students participating in 2009. The purpose of the program is to foster a love of reading in the children of Louisiana by motivating them to participate in the recognition of outstanding books, according to the website.
