BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) – If you’re looking to add a splash of color to your garden, the LSU AgCenter may have just what you’re looking for.
Breeders have developed an ornamental and edible sweet potato that can play double duty as both decoration for a garden and a tasty snack for the gardener.
Developed by LSU AgCenter breeders in collaboration with FitzGerald Nurseries, of Kilkenny, Ireland, the plants are known as ‘The Treasure Island Series,’ and it’s the plant’s tuberous fruits that are edible.
The sweet potatoes can grow in either containers, or in landscape, and they bloom in the fall.
Those who enjoy snacking on sweet potatoes will be happy to note that the tasty vegetables are a great source of vitamins B and C in addition to being high in fiber, iron, calcium and antioxidants.
