BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) – A 27-year-old Baton Rouge man was arrested this week for allegedly threatening to beat the mother of his children with the butt of a gun.

According to an official report completed by a deputy with the East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff’s Office (EBRSO), it was the morning of Wednesday, July 6 when Gerald Wayne Collins visited the home of his former partner to inquire as to when it would be his turn to look after their children.

Authorities say the former couple’s discussion escalated into an argument and that both children were home when the argument became so heated Collins brandished a handgun and threatened to strike his ex with it.

She told deputies she believed Collins would follow through on his threat and hit her because he had in the past.

At this point, Collins allegedly put the gun down and began punching her despite her demands to stop.

She told deputies that as the abuse continued, she tried to get to her phone and call 911 for help, but Collins took her phone, smashed it, and proceeded to choke her.

A friend, who was in another room when the argument began, then emerged and told deputies they saw Collins punching and attempting to strangle his ex.

Deputies relied on witness testimony from the victim’s friend, evidence of wounds on the victim’s body, as well as evidence of the smashed phone as proof of the incident.

Collins was arrested and jailed in East Baton Rouge Parish Prison on charges that included domestic abuse/child endangerment, interfering with emergency communication, and simple criminal damage to property.
