BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) – A Denham Springs man was charged with a second DWI after a crash on I-12 West on Sunday, Oct. 29.
The crash took place around 3:50 a.m. and ended with Cameron Ruiz, 25, of Denham Springs being charged. Ruiz was in a white Dodge SUV and the second vehicle involved in the crash was a Dodge Charger. The Charger sustained “severe front end damage,” according to the Louisiana State Police.
LSP said that dense fog caused visibility to be low. The driver of the Charger told state police that he attempted to avoid Ruiz’s vehicle which was stopped in front of him in the left lane and had no lights on. LSP then made contact with Ruiz who was inside an Acadian ambulance.
The responding trooper said Ruiz’s eyes were bloodshot and he smelled like alcohol. The trooper believed that Ruiz was intoxicated as he also exhibited slurred speech. He was arrested and LSP determined that the lights were off on Ruiz’s vehicle when the crash took place. He was taken to a local hospital.
The affidavit said that the trooper spoke with Ruiz who said “he was drinking at a wedding in Ponchatoula.” After further conversation with Ruiz, the trooper believed that the Denham Springs man “did not know where he was or what happened,” according to the affidavit.
Ruiz was eventually booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison and charged with driving while intoxicated: second offense, aggravated obstruction of a highway, vehicular negligent injuring and when lighted lamps are required.
The first time that Ruiz was charged with DWI was on Sunday, Sept. 10.
