In Riverside County a golden retriever is more than man’s best friend–he’s the mayor of his own community!
This is Maximus Mueller the second, better known as Max the mayor of Idyllwild.
You can find him cruising in his personalized pick-up truck. Don’t worry he doesn’t drive. He has Phyllis his Chief of Staff. The two make public appearances everyday to meet with constituents and interact with visitors.
Max has been in office now for 5 years but it was his uncle who became the first mayor of Idyllwild in 2012.
Now you may be wondering how did a furry friend become mayor?
“So six years ago, Idyllwild decided to elect its first mayor. You had to be a local resident, but you couldn’t run yourself, you could run your pet. In a voted election, 14 dogs and 2 cats ran and we decided to have an election to raise money for the animal rescues,” said Phyllis Mueller, Mayor Max’s Chief Of Staff.
She says Mayor Max’s role is to make the world a better place by conveying unconditional love and doing good deeds for others.
Mayor Max and his deputies, who are also golden retrievers, go to fundraisers and events all year round.
