Mighty Moms non-profit announce increased efforts to feed needy families in Livingston Parish

The Mighty Moms non-profit organization is expanding its “Give & Take” barrels and containers throughout Livingston Parish to increase access to free food for families in need during the Gov. John Bel Edward’s Stay-at-Home order.

“We are increasing the number of food barrels we have at strategic sites across the parish. We are working with our locations to make these ‘Give & Take” barrels available to outdoor walk-up traffic. These containers will be filled with non-perishable food items that needy families can take. This will allow families to access provisions without the need for human-to-human contact,” Dawn Birdsong, founder of Mighty Moms and board president said.

According to Birdsong volunteers will have the barrels filled and distributed across the parish by noon on Wednesday, March 24. She asked donors to take their items directly to the barrel or container closest to them to minimize contact and exposure with others. The locations include:

The ramp up in the barrel programs comes as the organization had to halt its “Full Tummy” project. This project distributes bags of food to school children in need at their area schools. The program was once distributing an average of 600 bags per week to students across 42 different Livingston schools before closure.

“Full Tummy is an important part of the lives of so many children,” Birdsong said. “But with our schools closed, we need a new way to get food to these children. Normally, our volunteers would just make home deliveries, but concerns over spreading the virus prohibit that action. That’s why adding barrel locations, creating greater access to food and expanding our donor and volunteer base is so important at this time,” Birdsong said.

Donation to Mighty Moms can be sent by text by texting GIVE to 225-269-1151 or give online at www.mightymomsgo.org. Volunteers who notice that a barrel is low or empty can make a donation to that site or send an email to barrels@mightymomsgo.org.
