Mississippi Department of Health reports 6,774 new COVID-19 cases, 16 deaths

JACKSON, Miss. (BRPROUD) – The Mississippi State Department of Health (MSDH) releases new coronavirus data of 6,774 confirmed COVID-19 cases in the state with 16 reported deaths—and 275 current outbreaks in long-term care facilities on Thursday, Jan. 6.

The news surges after the holidays when spikes of COVID-19 and the Omicron variant cases have increase across the U.S.

MSDH updates COVID-19 data weekly to ensure accuracy. Counties, case numbers and deaths may change as investigation of new discoveries and or additional information of the outbreak arise.

Confirmed cases and deaths are also generally determined by positive PCR tests, which detect the presence of ongoing coronavirus infection. Mississippi MSDH investigates and reports both probable and confirmed cases and deaths according to the CSTE case definition.
