THIBODAUX, La. (BRPROUD) — Lafourche Parish District Attorney Kristine Russell announced that a Thibodaux man charged with second degree murder in 2019 was convicted as charged by Lafourche Parish jury May 26, 2022.

30-year old John Paul Washington was arrested by the Thibodaux Police Department after an investigation revealed that he, along with an accomplice, murdered Travontae Williams in the Midland Drive and Plantation Road, according to Lafourche Parish District Attorney.

Evidenced that was introduced showed Washington making statements with intention to murder the victim.

The jury discussed for about three and a half hours before presenting an unanimous guilty verdict.

Officials say John Paul Washington now faces a mandatory life sentence without the possibility of probation, parole, or suspension of sentence.

Assistant District Attorney Jason Chatagnier says, “I want to thank the members of the jury for their attention throughout the trial, it is not an easy thing to render a just verdict. It takes courage and attention to detail, and we appreciate their service. Our hope now, is that the family of the victim can heal from this senseless tragedy.”

The Honorable John Leblanc ordered that Washington be remanded into the law enforcement custody without bail pending his June 15 sentencing date.

Washington’s accomplice is set for jury trial in July of 2022.
