Livingston, La (BRPOUD) – It’s day two of the trial against Melanie Curtin.

WARNING: some of the following details are disturbing and mention sexual assault.

Curtin is charged with aggravated rape and video voyeurism. Her case is connected to former Livingston Parish high-ranking deputy Dennis Perkins and his wife Cynthia. Curtin’s defense is arguing that she is a victim, not a criminal.

Curtin cried in court after they played a pornographic video for the jury that lasted nearly twenty minutes allegedly showing Curtin’s involvement in raping an unconscious victim. Curtin is also accused of filming the encounter without the victim’s consent.

Her defense attorney, John McLindon, alleges that both his client and the alleged victim were drugged before the alleged rape was recorded.

The state Attorney General’s office is prosecuting this case, framing it as a “coordinated rape”. They say the video makes it clear that Curtin was the one recording.

The AG’s second witness read text messages between Curtin and the victim in the days before and after the incident. Texts from Curtin to the alleged victim that read, “you passed smooth out” and asking if she had remembered anything.

Prosecutors say there is other evidence of Perkins and Curtin performing sexual acts in public places and private homes.

Testimony continues Thursday in Livingston Parish. The trial is expected to continue through Friday.
