BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) – Louisianans love their coffee, and this is for good reason. 

Not only is coffee known to jump-start energy levels, but it’s also rich in antioxidants and believed to be linked to a lower risk of heart disease, stroke, and heart failure

While many people love a classic cup of joe, according to Coffee Affection, the most popular coffee drink in Louisiana is the caffè latte. 

But some people are replacing their beloved caffè lattes with non-caffeinated energy boosting foods and drinks. 

Why the change in habits?

Well, experts say that in certain cases, too much caffeine can have a negative impact on one’s health.

For example, some people find that drinking coffee or other caffeinated beverages increases their anxiety, contributes to insomnia, raises blood pressure, and even causes severe digestive issues. 

Along those lines, non-coffee drinkers who need a morning pick-me-up to start their day or a boost to ride out the dreaded midday slump may find the following four non-caffeinated alternatives helpful: 

#1 Matcha Tea

This green tea is high in antioxidants and has a warm earthy flavor. According to The Wellnest, “the buzz you’ll get from matcha will make you feel alert without the jitters you typically encounter from coffee… Matcha contains an amino acid called L-theanine, which gives you a calmer burst of energy and no crash.”

#2 Fresh Fruit Smoothie

A delicious blend of berries, bananas, oranges, and leafy greens not only appease the taste buds, but have all the vitamins and nutrients needed for a healthy energy boost.

#3 Dried Mango and Macadamia Nuts 

Snacking on a handful of this kind of healthy trail mix means getting plenty of protein, fiber, healthy fats and the means to get you past a midday slump.

#4 Berry and Yogurt Parfait

According to Healthline, “Berries are packed with nutrients, including fiber and vitamin C, as well as anti-inflammatory compounds that help keep your body healthy.”

The article suggests trying this recipe with “layers Greek yogurt with fresh berries and chia seeds. Sprinkle with toppings like chopped nuts, cacao nibs, or granola.”

If you don’t mind a minimal amount of caffeine, you might also consider swapping a morning cup of joe with a cup of homemade hot cocoa or a handful of dark chocolate covered almonds. 

For some, nothing will replace a classic cup of coffee.
