BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) – Specific aromas are often associated with certain times of year.

What scents come to mind when you think of December?

Perhaps the final month of the year conjures thoughts of aromas like peppermint and hot cocoa or freshly baked gingerbread.

If the latter scent comes to mind and makes you want to enjoy more than just the smell of gingerbread, you may be in luck as Monday, December 12 marks National Gingerbread House Day.

To most baker-builders, the sweetest aspect of this construction project is the last, the part when they can finally sample the fruits of their labor.

Some use National Gingerbread House Day to bake one such home from scratch while others opt on hosting a gingerbread competition.

Or perhaps some celebrants will follow in the footsteps of the baker who made the world’s largest gingerbread house in Bryan, Texas. According to a website called National Today, this freakishly large feat of a baked good clocked in at 2,520 square feet and was nearly the size of a tennis court.

Would you like to try your hand at replicating that?

If the answer to the above question is a resounding, “No, thank you,” but now you’re a tad upset because this article made you crave gingerbread, fear not. According to Google, you may be able to find what you’re looking for at a local grocery store.

Stores in the capital area that are known to carry gingerbread houses include:

  • Walmart Supercenter Bakery- 10606 N. Mall Drive (225) 8104
  • Target Bakery- 2001 Millerville Road (225) 272-4275
  • Albertsons Bakery- 9960 Bluebonnet Blvd. (225) 768-7775

However you choose to observe National Gingerbread House Day, we hope the start of this week is much sweeter than the average Monday.
