New Years Eve celebrations will go on as planned with safety guidelines in Baton Rouge

BATON ROUGE, La (BRPROUD) – Despite the recent spike in COVID-19 cases, the annual Red Stick Revelry will kick off the New Year in Baton Rouge Friday. But parish officials want to make one thing clear to families before they gather, mask up and keep your distance.

This is the ninth year in a row for the Red Stick Revelry event, but because of COVID-19, last year was virtual. This year officials believe it is safe enough to be in person.

“The big thing that is different this year is the emphasis on safety in relation to COVID-19,” said Chief Communications Officer Mark Armstrong. “So really take advantage of these wide-open spaces out here and keep yourself distant.”

Armstrong says if you or anyone in your household is sick to stay home and encourages vaccinations.

“Please get vaccinated, please get boosted before you come to any events like this,” said Armstrong.

“New Year’s Eve activities will be held in our large open green spaces that allow the public to practice social distancing and still enjoy the music, laser light show and fireworks,” said Mayor Broome. “I encourage you to wear a mask and keep a safe distance so this event can be held safely and with respect for everyone attending. Red Stick Revelry has been one of our most popular events and it is so important that everyone be considerate of others so we can celebrate safely.”

The event will start with the Red Stick Rising which is a celebration for kids of all ages at the outdoor covered plaza of the River Center Branch Library on North Boulevard. Red Stick Rising will feature arts activities, storytelling, and a special performance by Clay Achee, creator of Ziggy and the Junkyard Band, and the new LPB show Ziggy’s Arts Adventure. Achee will perform songs with his puppets and talk with kids about puppeteering according to the press release.
