Officials warn Amazon customers about new brushing scam

BATON ROUGE, La (BRPROUD) – Unordered Amazon packages are hitting the doorsteps of many Americans across the country.

The Better Business Bureau of South Central Louisiana is warning consumers of packages sent from Amazon or other retail companies with no return address.

These packages are usually filled with lightweight items like ping pong balls or seeds, this is the scam known as brushing.

According to The Better Business Bureau of South Central Louisiana, the purpose of the scam is to create fake customer profiles with real names on their website and then post false positive reviews for their products and/or company.

The Better Business Bureau of South Central Louisiana wants those who received these packages to:

  • Notify the retailer
  • Report fraudulent purchases or other security issues
  • Change your account passwords
  • Keep a close eye on credit reports and credit card bills
