BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — Our Lady of the Lake (OLOL) will be offering a revolutionary procedure to assist patients with difficulty breathing because of emphysema.

The procedure is called Bronchoscopic Lung Volume Reduction (BLVR) and is a one-time procedure that uses FDA-approved endobronchial valve designed to help emphysema patients breathe easier without surgery.

Our Lady of the Lake Physician Group pulmonologists have successfully performed the procedure over 15 times within the last year.

Dr. Abdulla Majid-Moosa, a pulmonologist at OLOL says, “This procedure can improve the quality of life for patients by allowing them to breathe easier, be less short of breath, and be more active and energetic. I’m proud to be part of the only group offering this procedure in Baton Rouge.”

BLVR uses one-way valves that are inserted during a simple bronchoscopy that requires no cutting. During the procedure, on average four small valves are placed in a patient’s airways to block off the diseased parts of the lungs where air gets trapped called hyperinflation. This allows the healthier part of the lungs expand to take in more air.
