Photos of a “frozen” Niagara Falls are going viral, but the falls aren’t frozen

Images of a “frozen” Niagara Falls are going viral- but the natural wonder is not actually frozen.

Although the area around the falls is coated in ice, the water is still flowing, Angela Berti with the NYS Dept. of Parks, Recreation, and Historic Preservation said Tuesday.

“In some cases in the past couple of years when it’s been really really cold all winter you almost don’t see the water flowing but it is flowing behind the ice and the snow,” Berti said.

The last time the falls actually froze was in the early 1800s and 1900s.

“With the creation of  the New York State Power Authority generating plant, that doesn’t happen anymore,” Berti explained.
