BATON ROUGE, La. (NBC Local 33) (FOX 44) — A female driver is dead after being hit head-on by a suspected drunk driver in Iberville Parish, according to Louisiana State Police spokesperson Taylor Scratnz.
The crash took the life of Julia Patterson, 39, of Plaquemine, after police say she was hit by a 2002 Chevrolet Silverado driven by Roger Brigalia, 41, also of Plaquemine.
Investigators believe Brigalia was traveling eastbound on LA Hwy 77 and for reasons still under investigation, the vehicle crossed the centerline into the opposing lane and struck Patterson, who was driving a 2016 Nissan Altima.
Patterson was unrestrained at the time of the crash. She was pronounced dead on the scene. Police do not believe impairment was a factor on the behalf of Patterson.
Brigalia, who was traveling with a passenger, were both unrestrained at the time of the crash. They sustained moderate injuries and were transported to a hospital for treatment.
Police believe impairment was a factor on the part of Brigalia and a toxicology sample was taken from him which will be submitted for analysis.
Brigalia faces multiple charges including:
Vehicular Homicide, Vehicular Negligent Injuring, DWI (1st Offense), Possession of Schedule I Drugs, Possession of Schedule II Drug, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, Driving Left of Center, Driving Under Suspension.
Brigalia was arrested and booked into the Iberville Parish jail after being medically cleared from the hospital.
The crash remains under investigation.
